Occupational safety and health in storage procedures of information resources: a case study on the new central library of Cairo University

Abstract

This study aims at: identifying hazards of storing information resources in
libraries and information centers which affect occupational safety and health,
evaluating the procedures to overcome and prevent them and planning the
correct procedures, with the aim of increasing librarians' knowledge about these
hazards and the scientific manners for detecting and preventing them, whether
individual or in groups.
The study followed "The Case Study Method", depending on "A Chick
List" which applied in the new central library of Cairo University as a model of
Arabian libraries.
The main findings of this research: there were several hazards in storage
procedures of information resources, which badly effect on occupational safety
and health, caused by: occupational safety and health administration,
construction hazards, physical hazards, biological hazards, fire hazards, storage
procedures hazards and individual hazards. Hence the study recommended a
number of scientific manners for detecting and preventing these hazards, more
over librarians should put and unify written standards and laws to protect library
employee and its surrounding environment from all hazards
