YouTube citations in academic literatures: an exploratory analytical study.

Abstract

There are many indications that assert the role of YouTube in the
processes of official and informal communication between the scholars
and academic persons. But the size and extent of using YouTube videos
in the published academic researches is unknown and it was not a subject
for a previous or similar study. Accordingly, this study endeavors to
explore the size of citations with YouTube in the indexed scientific
production Scopus database. The study observed (10257) studies of
Scopus publishes cited at least one of You Tube videos in the review lists
for eight years (2006 to 2013). The study showed that the sector of social
sciences and human affairs is the highest percentage (48.07 %) among
the different scientific sectors for citation with YouTube. Followed by the
physical and natural sciences (38.3 %), then the health and medical
sciences (10.1 %) and finally the life sciences (3.52 %). Most of the
subjective sectors agreed that the scientific articles are the most
publishers that inciting with YouTube (Percentage of Life Science is 58.8
%), percentage of health and medical sciences is (57.6 %) and percentage
of social and human sciences is( 62.7 %), while the physical and natural
sciences represented the conferences business as the most publishers of
citations with YouTube (57.02% (.
