Effectiveness of an E-training program for increasing awareness of plagiarism: an experimental study on the students of the Department of Information Science at Umm Al-Qura University

Abstract

current study aimed at exploring the effectiveness of an electronic
training program for increasing the awareness of students of the Department of
Information Science at Umm Al Qura University. The training program was
designed using the Desire to Learn (D2L) Learning Management System (LMS)
used at Umm Al Qura University. The training program included two training
modules, namely; (plagiarism), and (citations).
To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher used the one-group
experimental approach to the students of a special Topic. The sample consisted
of (25) students. The tools used for conducting the research were, the cognitive
test, the practical performance observation card, and directional scale.
The results showed that there were statistically significant differences at
(0.01) between the mean scores of the students in all three tools. The pre/post
measurement of the cognitive test, as well as the practical performance
observation card, and the directional scale in favor of the post measure. In
addition, achieving more than 1.2 points of the effectiveness rate according to
Black equation.
The program also proved its effectiveness in raising awareness among
the students of the Department of Information Science at Umm Al-Qura
University. In conclusion, the researcher suggests a set of recommendations
which may contribute to the awareness of students about plagiarism and how to
avoid it
