Abstract

This study reviews the scientific literature on automated indexing of Arabic journals. The scientific studies that have addressed the subject or are related to the study's topic in its various aspects were reviewed and analyzed according to their qualitative, temporal, formal, linguistic, and methodological orientations. The objective content of 42 scientific studies was reviewed and analyzed according to the current study's thematic division into three axes: studies that address the concept and importance of automated indexing, factors affecting the indexing, practical applications of automated indexing of the study population.

The study relied on the "bibliometric bibliographic method" to study the different orientations of these studies and extract some different indicators from them.

The study found that most of the previous studies focused on evaluating the process of indexing in libraries and information centers, and none of them addressed the indexing process in databases. There is also a deficiency in the studies addressing the subject of workers in automatic indexing projects in various scientific institutions.

The study recommended conducting further studies about indexers, measuring their skills, capabilities to perform their tasks, their needs for development and keeping pace with advancements. The study also recommended further studies to address cooperative indexing projects between Arab institutions to benefit from saving time and effort and cooperation between local and international institutions, avoiding duplication and interference in indexed materials in different institutions, and achieving the maximum benefit for researchers by collecting Arab intellectual production under one digital platform.
