The role of library and information specialists in STEM schools and its relationship to students' attitudes regarding information technologies

Abstract

Library and information specialists at STEM schools help students and teachers to search the official sources of information quickly and effectively. Therefore, this study seeks to achieve a main goal, which is to study the role of library and information specialists at STEM schools in light of information technologies through three main aspects (the general roles, the activities and the services provided) in addition to the study of students' attitudes towards those roles.The study used the analytical descriptive approach, and the research sample included 176 (10 specialists .166 students) from 10 schools, and the sample was randomly selected. The research methods included an interview with some officials in the Central STEM Unit, a questionnaire explaining the role of the Library and information specialists with its three aspects, and a questionnaire clarifying students’ attitudes towards the role of the Library and information specialists in light of Information technologies. The results indicated that there is a positive, statistically significant correlation at 0.01 between the role of the Library and information specialists at STEM schools regarding information technologies and the students’ attitudes towards this role, In addition there are statistically significant differences between male and female specialists in the activities provided in STEM libraries in favor of females, and there is also a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the specialists of the study in each of the three aspects according to their number of years of experience. The study recommends providing continuous support to the libraries of STEM schools.
