Visual Search, A Technology for Information Retrieval on the Internet: A Study of Search and Retrieval Techniques within Search Engines

Abstract

This paper studies visual search as a technology for searching and retrieving static visual information within search engines on the Internet. It discusses its definition, features, its applications, and use. As well as studying the techniques of search and retrieval within visual search engines in order to reach the best of these engines currently. The study is limited to 5 visual search engines that meet its limits. In addition, it is the most widely used, most popular with Internet users, and belongs to well-known companies in the world of information and communication technology. Baidu, Bing Visual Search, Google Image, TinEye, and Yandex were studied, and analyzed according to two checklists with 32 criteria, 18 criteria for search techniques 14 criteria for search results. Analytical descriptive methodology, was used to conduct the study. The study concluded that a total of 68.75% of the search and retrieval criteria were available in the Bing visual search engine, followed by Google Image and Yandex at 65.62%, followed by TinEye at 59.37%, Finally, Baidu at 53.12%. The study recommends conducting more research on visual search, and looking at the possibility of designing, creating, and applying Arab search engines to retrieve still images on the Internet; This field is considered one of the modern and fertile fields that researchers have not addressed before.
