Abstract

Libraries of all types receive remarkable attention in the United Arab Emirates, and school libraries are one of the most important types among them. This is because school libraries represent the initial impression and the first external station that students use in order to access information resources. In addition, through kindergarten up to high school libraries, students learn how to make use of such resources. In a large project, Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge has developed the School Libraries Sector by transforming these libraries into learning resource centers that are commensurate with the requirements of the twenty-first century.
This project is based on developing the centers’ facilities and equipment through creating up-to-date designs that suit the centers, supplying them with paper and electronic information resources including books and magazines, subscribing to global databases, and providing the centers with computers and internet services, etc.). The current study aims at recording and analyzing data on the performance of the learning resource centers in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi through defining learning resource centers in terms of concept, importance and objectives, and the standards adopted in the field of libraries at the international, local and regional levels, with special focus on school libraries and learning resource centers. In addition, the study will examine the project of transforming school libraries into learning resource centers with their role in the educational process and the services they provide, and also examine the equipment, work procedures and policies applied in the centers.
